#HOW OLD IS TOM JERRY CARTOON SERIES#
Gene DeitchĪfter the MGM cartoon studio closed in 1957, MGM revived the series with Gene Deitch directing an additional 13 Tom and Jerry shorts from 1961 to 1962. In their otherwise domestic life, war is a constant, and all weaponry, sharp or not, can be used. In the first cartoon, Jerry punches Tom directly in the eye – a sign of things to come. During this time, they won seven Academy Awards for Animated Short Film, tying for first place with Silly Symphonies with the most awards in the category.īarbera and Hanna went for stylization and more graphic violence. In its original run, Hanna and Barbera produced 114 Tom and Jerry shorts for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studio in Hollywood from ‘40 to ‘58. Hanna-Barbera offered studio employees a monetary prize to come up with the best name and that’s how Tom & Jerry were born. The short was an instant hit but the names were not. On their introduction, they were Jasper and Jinx. But they were yet to become Tom and Jerry. Regardless, Hanna-Barbera stood their ground, and Tom & Jerry made their debut in February 1940 in the short Puss Gets the Boot. There had already been enough cat & mouse cartoons. The cartoon seemingly has an interminable history which can be divided into different eras based on the producers and the style of animation. The curious thing about all this is the affection between them, despite the pain. They stayed close to the rules of physics, aiming for realism but with exaggeration. Disney’s internal rules prohibited piercing of the cartoon body with sharp instruments. Depression-era audiences liked the more adult stories that Warners was putting out, in which firearms were often present (duck and and wabbit hunting was a mainstay). In 1940, war had started in Europe and would follow for the US in December 1941. Tom, the cartoon cat and Jerry, the house mouse are still going at each other with a stick, an axe, a bomb, a saw, a weight dropped on the head or 10,000 other forms of dispatch, none of which has a fatal result.
The music for the shorts was created by music director Scott Bradley. Music has always played a very important role in all the Tom and Jerry shorts enhancing the emotions in the scenes. In most cases Tom is unable to catch Jerry simply because Jerry is smarter and more cunning than Tom. In some shorts they both are seen as going along very well and there is no particular reason shown as to why Tom is always desperately chasing Jerry all the time but irrespective of the reason the chase given by Tom to Jerry has always been admired by viewers. Luckily, there’s only a few weeks to go until Tom and Jerry in New York comes to HBO Max on July 1. A domestic opening weekend of $14.1 million still ranks as one of the higher first frames over the last fifteen months or so, making it clear there’s still an audience out there for the perennial foes. In fact, Tim Story’s live-action/CGI hybrid debuted simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max this past February, where it went on to earn over $118 million at the box office, a solid return given the standards of the pandemic era. Since first appearing in 1940, Tom and Jerry have been the subjects of over over 160 theatrical short films, winning seven Academy Awards in the process, leading to innumerable spinoffs, episodic outings, animated features, video games and everything in between in the decades since.
seven years ago, with festive special Santa’s Little Helpers arriving in October 2014, before that, The Tom and Jerry Show ran for 114 episodes across five seasons and 117 episodes. Renegade have been involved in numerous Tom and Jerry-related projects since first partnering up with Warner Bros.
